Saulo Moreno
Saulo
Moreno, in his late 70's, is one of the most creative and original folk
artists in Mexico. For years, he has been very well-known for his wonderful
figures of skeletons made of paper mache over a wire armature. When young,
Sr. Moreno studied for a year at the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico City,
but was too poor to contine because of the high tuition. He learned much
from studying the human figure. His skeletons are likely the most expressive
gestural pieces of Mexican folk art found. He is able to create an amazing
range of expression with a minimum of detail! This genius is seen in the
two skeletons in the photo at the left.
We were moved to hear Saulo's stories
of his childhood and how he was raised by his grandparents in their stall
in the Merced Market. He told us how his work was inspired by memories of
the dolls he had watched hanging above him as he played in the marketplace.
